BMC Commemorates Walkathon for Dengue Awareness Drive

Bhubaneswar, 5.7. 2023 – In an effort to raise awareness about the prevention of dengue, the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) organized a walkathon in the presence of Mayor Sulochana Das and Ward Corporator Saikh Nursan. The event took place today, with participants from the Maninageswar slum of Mancheswar coming together to emphasize the importance of taking responsibility for our health. The walkathon aims to highlight the need for citizens of Bhubaneswar to be aware of dengue and take proactive measures to prevent its spread during the rainy season. Mayor Sulochana Das emphasized the importance of community involvement and cooperation to combat dengue effectively. One of the crucial steps in preventing the spread of dengue is to remain vigilant and promptly address any non-functional containers that may accumulate water, such as pots, tea cups, and coconut shells. Stagnant water in these containers provides breeding grounds for disease-carrying mosquitoes. By responsibly discarding or destroying these items, individuals can contribute to safeguarding their surroundings and protecting their communities from the threat of mosquito-borne diseases. The efforts to prevent dengue extend beyond the slum areas. The BMC, along with its staff, workers, and health officers, is actively monitoring all areas and taking necessary measures to destroy mosquito breeding grounds. Regular fogging and tyres destruction are being carried out to minimize the risk of dengue transmission. Commissioner Shri Vijay Amruta Kulange emphasized the importance of immediate action upon encountering suspected dengue cases and announced the commemoration of dry days every Thursday and Saturday. The dry day campaign is being celebrated in each ward, with the active participation of corporators, ward core committee members, NGOs, and self-help groups. Their collective efforts aim to create a dengue-free environment and promote public health and well-being.The walkathon witnessed the presence of Zonal Deputy Commissioner Purandar Nanda, City Health Officer Dr. Deepak Kumar Bisoi, Additional District Assistant Public Health Officer Dr. Antarjyami Mishra, Anti-larvae workers, Anganwadi and Asha workers, and various self-help groups.

Following the walkathon, Mayor Sulochana Das and all BMC staff conducted a thorough inspection of the drain works. Mayor Das directed the authorities to address waterlogging and drain water issues promptly. In particular, cleaning the IDCO drain was highlighted as a priority to ensure effective dengue prevention measures.

The BMC encourages all citizens of Bhubaneswar to actively participate in the dengue awareness drive and take responsibility for their own health and the well-being of the community. By working together, we can create a dengue-free city and foster a healthier future for all.
