Chief Secretary Chairs Meeting to Analyze Monsoon Preparedness in Bhubaneswar

Bhubaneswar, 12.7.23- A crucial meeting was chaired by Chief Secretary Shri Pradeep Kumar Jena to address waterlogging issues and the development of drains in the state capital. The meeting emphasized the need to clean drain sludge and relocate it to mitigate waterlogging.A collaborative presentation by Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) and Public Works Department (PWD) provided detailed information on the development of various drains in Bhubaneswar, including land acquisition and new schemes. The meeting discussed regular drain maintenance, field visits, and the provision of necessary facilities during emergencies. The ward core committee also plays a vital role in the departmental maintenance and functioning of the drains.Last year, 75 sensitive areas were identified in BMC’s jurisdiction, and appropriate actions were taken to address the situation effectively. Measures were implemented, such as installing necessary pump-sets and ensuring water drainage facilities during critical circumstances, to minimize the impact on local residents during heavy rainfall. As a result, the number of sensitive areas has decreased to 32. The government is actively working on initiatives to eliminate all danger zones and reduce the number to zero.Chief Secretary emphasized the importance of proper precautions by the National Highway department for waterlogging areas near the Iskon temple. He directed BMC and line departments to collaborate and construct a drain from Krishna Tower, opposite the Iskon temple, to Bhoi Sahi to mitigate waterlogging. Collective efforts were stressed to address necessary requirements.Additionally, it was determined that a training camp would be organized for BMC engineers and officials in collaboration with the fire department to equip them with the necessary skills to effectively manage waterlogging situations.
The meeting was attended by Shri G Mathivathanan Principal Secretary of H & UD Dept., Vice Chairman of BDA, BMC Commissioner, MD of IDCO, Director General of the Fire Department, and General Manager of NHI.
